loss of consciousness. In most cases, the anesthesiologist will also use muscle relaxants to produce a profound
relaxation of the body. This will make the surgery easier to perform and will mean less pain afterward. Because
your muscles will not be functioning, you won't be able to breathe spontaneously. But a tube will be placed in
your windpipe (trachea) and connected to a machine (ventilator) that will deliver air to your lungs every few
seconds.
The anesthesiologist monitors breathing by periodically checking the concentration of oxygen in the blood.
The anesthesiologist is also in charge of administering fluids intravenously, including blood when needed. The
amount and the quality of the fluids are regulated carefully to maintain adequate blood pressure, an adequate
amount of circulating blood and adequate blood flow to the body's organs.
